Early School Start and Homework Elimination Policy in West Java Considered Positive

BANDUNG, KOMPAS— West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has established a policy for school entry at 06:30 and eliminated homework for students in the West Java region. The Vice Chairman of the West Java Regional Representative Council responded positively to this policy.
Previously, the Governor of West Java issued Circular Letter Number 58/PL.03/Disdik regarding Effective Hours in Educational Units in West Java Province. In general, this circular regulates a five-day school week with learning hours starting at 06:30 WIB. The levels covered range from kindergarten to senior high school or equivalent.
The distinguishing factor at each level is the duration of learning. For the equivalent of kindergarten, from Monday to Thursday, the minimum learning duration is 195 minutes per day. On Friday, the minimum learning duration is 120 minutes per day.
The duration of learning at the elementary school (SD) level to the high school (SMA) level is also differentiated. In general, the higher the level of education, the longer the minimum duration of learning. At all levels, the learning duration is shorter on Fridays.
The Deputy Chairman of the West Java Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD), Ono Surono, expressed his support for Dedi Mulyadi’s policy regarding the school start time at 06:30 WIB and the elimination of homework for students.
The policy will take effect starting from the new academic year in July 2025. “It’s good. I support it because from Monday to Friday, students can focus on school, and Saturday and Sunday can be utilized for family events and extracurricular activities with family supervision,” said Ono, Thursday (5/6/2025).
According to Ono, the adjustment of the schedule aligns with the curfew policy and will have a positive impact on children’s lifestyles. The curfew policy has been implemented since Monday (2/6/2025).
“Learning activities will be well monitored and children will have sufficient break time because they wake up and enter school earlier,” said Ono.
Regarding concerns about travel time to school, Ono considered it not a big problem. “There is no problem with travel time and long distance. The difference is only 30 minutes from the previous schedule. The point is, if bedtime is moved forward, waking up earlier is not a problem,” he said.
Ono also welcomed the elimination of homework. “I agree. The school hours are already long, so I think that is sufficient to meet the needs of the teaching and learning process in school,” he said.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has requested schools in West Java to cease assigning homework to students starting from the 2025/2026 academic year. This policy aligns with previous directives, namely the commencement of school hours at 06:30 WIB.
“Children are not allowed to be outside the house after 9:00 PM without supervision or urgent needs accompanied by permission from their parents. Therefore, the West Java Provincial Government plans to eliminate homework for students,” said Dedi.
Dedi emphasized that the policy of starting school earlier is a compensation for the weekend break. According to him, beginning activities earlier is better than starting too late.
“This will take effect in the new academic year. Starting school at 06:30 is a form of compensation for the holidays on Saturday and Sunday. Therefore, it is better to start earlier,” he added.
He also encouraged that all school assignments and tasks be completed within the school environment. This way, students are not burdened with academic work at home.
“All tasks are completed at school, not taken home. At home, children should be able to relax, read books, exercise, or help their parents,” he stated.
