Muhammadiyah Speaks Out on Early School Policy in West Java

Muhammadiyah and the Indonesian Education University conveyed their responses regarding the policy of starting school earlier in West Java.

BANDUNG, KOMPAS – The Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah has responded to the policy of school start times at 06:30 WIB in West Java. Muhammadiyah urges the West Java Provincial Government to conduct a thorough study before implementing this policy.
This statement was made by the Chairman of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, while attending the inauguration event of the Rector of the Indonesia University of Education (UPI), Professor Didi Sukyadi, in Bandung, West Java, on Monday (16/6/2025).
Haedar stated that his side welcomes the policy with important notes, particularly regarding decision-making. “So, please proceed if decisions are made based on comprehensive studies. However, everything must be accountable in its entirety,” he said.
According to him, an in-depth study of the policy is needed because the reality of education in West Java is very complex and cannot be simplified.
Muhammadiyah has hundreds of educational institutions in West Java. Of the total 239 educational institutions owned by Muhammadiyah, there are 57 elementary schools, 50 junior high schools, 38 senior high schools, and 15 vocational schools.
“Education in West Java is closely related to the economic conditions of the community, the quality of human resources, and the diversity of geographical conditions from the coast, plains, mountains, to large cities,” he stated.
He hopes that the policy can be accompanied by an integrative approach. Local governments, both at the city and regency levels, have significant authority and education budgets, even in some cases exceeding those of the central government. Therefore, it is important to carefully examine all aspects of education.
“All matters concerning education must be examined carefully. If necessary, an academic study should be conducted and discussed with various parties before making a decision,” said Haedar.
Meanwhile, the new Rector of UPI, Didi Sukyadi, also responded to the policy of early school entry in West Java. Didi stated that UPI is ready to synergize through research and collaboration, considering that UPI has many laboratory schools that can serve as models.
“We already have long-term and medium-term research plans. Therefore, when there is a new policy such as morning school, we can immediately incorporate it into the research agenda,” he stated.
Didi also expressed his commitment to accelerate UPI’s efforts in realizing the grand vision of national education. In addition to focusing on education, UPI will also promote the strengthening of research and the downstreaming of research results.
“We will link research with national strategic themes. This will enable us to conduct scientific publications while making a tangible contribution to national development,” he stated.
